2. sound/music of romeo and juliet

Answer:

The use of sound in Romeo & Juliet (1996)

There are three types of sound that can be used in a film: dialogue; sound effects and music. As well as this, these sounds can also be classified as diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. I shall be analysing the sound used in the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann

Non-diegetic sound is the sound that has been put into the film, e.g. background music or voice overs

Diegetic sound is the sound that is naturally occurring, e.g. the sound of the wind or foot steps

Sound Effects - there are many sound effects that have been used in this opening sequence to emphasise certain movements and actions. The sound effects used were:

The sound effects used were: the screeching of wheels when cars were braking or pulling away. the revving of car engines. the tapping of Tybalt's metal heeled shoes.

the screeching of wheels when cars were braking or pulling away

the revving of car engines

the tapping of Tybalt's metal heeled shoes

gun shots

the sound of the gun hitting the floor

the screech from the gas station sign blowing in the wind

Most of these sound effects are diegetic as they would occur naturally in the scene, however, some of these sounds have been emphasised to make them stand out to the audience. For example, the movement of their guns in the wind, the match hitting the floor and the movement of their shirts to reveal their guns.

As the gas station scene was filmed next to a busy motorway much of the background noise has been cutout or the sound levels are reduced, although you can occasionally hear a vehicle driving past in the background.

Romeo and Juliet, play by William Shakespeare, written about 1594–96 and first published in an unauthorized quarto in 1597. An authorized quarto appeared in 1599, substantially longer and more reliable. A third quarto, based on the second, was used by the editors of the First Folio of 1623. The characters of Romeo and Juliet have been depicted in literature, music, dance, and theatre. The appeal of the young hero and heroine—whose families, the Montagues and the Capulets, respectively, are implacable enemies—is such that they have become, in the popular imagination, the representative type of star-crossed lovers.

Shakespeare sets the scene in Verona, Italy. Juliet and Romeo meet and fall instantly in love at a masked ball of the Capulets, and they profess their love when Romeo, unwilling to leave, climbs the wall into the orchard garden of her family’s house and finds her alone at her window. Because their well-to-do families are enemies, the two are married secretly by Friar Laurence. When Tybalt, a Capulet, seeks out Romeo in revenge for the insult of Romeo’s having dared to shower his attentions on Juliet, an ensuing scuffle ends in the death of Romeo’s dearest friend, Mercutio. Impelled by a code of honour among men, Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished to Mantua by the Prince of Verona, who has been insistent that the family feuding cease. When Juliet’s father, unaware that Juliet is already secretly married, arranges a marriage with the eminently eligible Count Paris, the young bride seeks out Friar Laurence for assistance in her desperate situation. He gives her a potion that will make her appear to be dead and proposes that she take it and that Romeo rescue her. She complies. Romeo, however, unaware of the friar’s scheme because a letter has failed to reach him, returns to Verona on hearing of Juliet’s apparent death. He encounters a grieving Paris at Juliet’s tomb, reluctantly kills him when Paris attempts to prevent Romeo from entering the tomb, and finds Juliet in the burial vault. There he gives her a last kiss and kills himself with poison. Juliet awakens, sees the dead Romeo, and kills herself. The families learn what has happened and end their feud.

22. Musical composition in Romeo and Juliet

Answer:

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Answer:

The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet - Shakespeare’s great romantic play - has inspired composers, opera producers, and ballet directors for centuries. Here is a selection of some of the greatest musical versions.

1. Romeo and Juliet – Sergei Prokofiev (1935)

When Prokofiev first presented his music to the Bolshoi Ballet, they claimed it was ‘undanceable’. Suites of the music were heard in Moscow and the U.S.A. before the full ballet premiered in Czechoslovakia in 1938. Its popular 'Dance of the Knights' is used as the theme for TV's 'The Apprentice'. Pictured are Tamara Rojo and Roberto Bolle in a 1998 Royal Albert Hall production.

2. West Side Story – Leonard Bernstein (1957)

The warring Montagues and Capulets became New York street gangs – the Sharks and the Jets – in Bernstein’s revolutionary musical. Puerto Rican Maria and American Tony even got their own balcony scene and some of the most brilliant songs written in the 20th century.

3. Romeo and Juliet – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1880)

Tchaikovsky was deeply inspired by Shakespeare and also wrote works based on 'The Tempest' and 'Hamlet'. Although styled an 'Overture-Fantasy', the overall design is a symphonic poem. After an unpromising start, the piece is now one of Tchaikovsky's most enduringly popular. Its love theme has been used in countless films and TV shows.

4. Romeo und Julie - Georg Benda (1776)

Benda’s opera was based upon a German translation of Shakespeare's play. While Benda eliminates many of the play’s characters, he makes Julie the strongest and most important character in the opera. He also gives the opera a happy ending. It was not staged in the UK until 2007.

5. Roméo et Juliette – Charles Gounod (1867)

Notable for its four duets for the main characters, this opera was a huge success for Gounod. It was soon parodied at the Théâtre Déjazet, as 'Rhum et eau en juillet' - 'Rum and Water in July'. The opera was first seen in London in July 1867 and remains a popular work in the repertoire. Pictured is the 2011 Opera Company of Philadelphia production.

6. I Capuleti e i Montecchi - Vincenzo Bellini (1830)

Bellini had only a month and a half to write his version for the 1830 Carnival season at La Fenice in Venice. He managed the task by borrowing ten numbers he had previously written for an unsuccessful opera, 'Zaira'. ‘I Capuleti’ was revived at Catania in 1935, the centenary of Bellini’s death, and given its first US performance in 1937.
